the devil or the snake

Thanks Jan for creating this blog, it is awesome! I took a bunch of notes in Gen 3 about the snake was "more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD made". My question is...was the devil using the snake to tempt Eve or was the snake the devil himself? When did God cast Lucifer down to earth?

Hey Jenn,
I don't know the answers to your questions... hopefully someone else will have some insight. I did re-read this section and check out the notes in my Life Applications Study Bible. For Genesis 3:1 it says, "Disguised as a crafty serpent, Satan came to tempt Eve. Satan at one time was an angel who rebelled against God and was thrown out of heaven. As a created being, Satan has definite limitations. Although he is trying to tempt everyone away from God, he will not be the final victor. In 3:14, 15, God promises that Satan will be crushed by one of the woman's offspring, the Messiah.

Revelation 13:9 when the war in heaven took place says - This great dragon-the ancient serpent called the Devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world-was thrown down to the earth with all his angels.
